Silver Snaffles Primrose Cumming 9781906123079 Books Reviews

written by Primrose Cummings.
A pony-mad girl who can't have a pony of her own, is drawn to the old pony owned by an elderly man, who uses him to pull a cart. To her astonishment one day the pony Tattles tells her to go through the stable's dark corner and say the password Silver Snaffles. She does - of course - and finds herself in a riding stables with no people. Just happy, chatty ponies who teach her to tack up and ride. Her first ride is on Cock Robin and after he's taught her the basics the next day she rides the more haughty Bryony.
A boy is also learning to ride there and they don't get much time to talk, but when one of the ponies goes missing and has been taken to a place full of cars, noise and dirt, the two of them decide to ride after her and rescue her.
I read this in paperback in the seventies and lent it to my younger brother, who didn't know as much about ponies as I did. He said "This is the best book I have ever read." His favourite moment was when Tattles was so happy, he danced a pony jig in the passageway.
I recommend it for up to eleven year olds, after that the reader might think it too simplistic. This does reflect a quieter time when kids didn't have pocket computers and phones, but it does no harm for them to read about how it used to be and the story was not too dateable - no old currency etc.

I have a copy of this book from 1937, so I can assure all readers the original book is 160 pages long. I don't know why anyone would put it longer. It is a WONDERFUL book! I've had horses all my life, thanks to my mother, and my copy of Silver Snaffles came from her. It's truly magic. I'm so thrilled to see it back in print, because I wanted to buy it for someone. And so glad that I can. Silver Snaffles and Black Beauty are the two "do not miss" list of equestrian literature. As a youthful rider, I learned so much from each and so little from all else! This book is sweet and instructive and not to be missed if you really love horses (and ponies!).
My daughter loves horses and she loves to read, so I thought this book was right up her alley. When I started to look for the book, I found out it is no longer in print, so I immeadeatly loged on to and sure enought they had several copies of it. You made my daughter's easter.
I loved this book as a pony mad child....and I loved it again on rereading 50 years on) I will certainly give it to any grandchild who loves horses and ponies )
I ordered this book for my wife and as I read the "product description" it mentioned content being 250 pages. She really wanted this book (not abbreviated version) as she had it as a child. We received it and obviously it was the abbreviated version of 134 pages. She was really disappointed especially since it was for her 60th birthday. What a rip off.....price was 20.00 plus shipping and erroneous product description.
