Terri Jentz's Strange Paradise is her phenomenal first-person account of what happened to her and her close Yale University roommate when they commenced their dream cross-country bike trip from the Pacific to the east coast. They's hardly begun when spending the night camping in an otherwise paradise of beauty on the wile Oregon coast they were brutally run-over while asleep in their tent and sleeping bags then slashed with an ax by the crazed perpetrator. Though their injuries were life-threatening - and outpouring of goodness and care showered upon them by Oregonians who were shocked that such random violence could ever happen in such a wholesome place as the Pacific Coast of Oregon - saved their lives and gave Ms. Jentz the fortitude and strength to return to that "strange paradise" to do the work that local and state police authorities failed to do: Find, arrest and send to prison the crazed man that attempted to murder her and her friend. Jentz - a literature major at Yale - is one of the most gifted writers I've read in years! Her words continue to paint photo-images as if you're there with her on the scene in Oregon - traveling from community-to-community, interviewing police and medical personnel as well as the residents of the town nearest to the location of the violent attack until she's finally able to reconstruct the crime scene until she zeros-in on the prime suspect. Its at once an intense suspense story as well as a personal journey of a courageous woman who longs to discover the "why" she and her roommate were chosen as targets of such a random yet horribly violent attempt on their lives just when they were embarking on the adventure trip of a life time. It will keep you glued from beginning to end.

Strange Piece of Paradise Terri Jentz 9780312426699 Books Reviews

About twenty years ago, Terri Jentz and a college friend from Yale decided to take a bicycle trip across the country. What started out as idyllic ended up in horrific tragedy. While camping in Oregon, Terri and her friend were viciously attacked and almost died. Up to the time of the Ms. Jentz's writing this book, no one had been apprehended for this crime.

Terri is now working as a film writer. She decides to go back to Oregon to research the crime, to try and put the pieces of the attack together and, at the same time, heal her own life which was horrifically traumatized following the attack. While in Oregon she begins her own investigation of what happens. She finds out that, anecdotally at least, many people know who the attacker is. She is astonished to learn that despite this, the police have never apprehended this man.

How Terri works to get the legal system behind her and to bring her attacker to justice is the subject of this riveting and extraordinary book. I was hardly able to put it down. When I did put it down to eat, sleep or work, I could not wait to pick it up again.

There are some painful and very disturbing descriptions and images in this book. However, this is real life. This is what happens when someone is hurt and damaged. I give this book my highest recommendation.
Great story telling, and an overall great read. Terri Jentz masterfully maneuvers between timelines while ensuring everything flows beautifully. I didn't know how long it was going to be before i ordered it (700+ pages), but it is definitely in the Product details here on . I was too captivated by the description and bought it quickly. I have already recommended this book to several people.
Strange Piece of Paradise is true crime with a supremely ironic twist-the true crime story is written not by an investigative reporter or a psychologist, but by the victim. Terri Jentz has managed to cope with the absolute horror of an incredibly vicious attack by facing the situation head on. Her assailant was never apprehended, and many years later she returned to the small town where she and a college roommate experienced such extreme violence that the roommate refused to ever discuss it. The result of Terri's investigation is a profound book exploring a society that promulgates violence and evil.

If investigating the circumstances of her attack was a journey of healing for Jentz, writing about it was her journey of justice. During the lengthy effort to fit the bits and pieces of the past together, Jentz was also repairing her soul. Her book is so much more than a memoir-it is a riveting expose of the reality of small town life in the west. She set out determined to discover the identity of her attacker and in the process discovered herself. She pulls off the scabs of her wounds to reveal the pain and anger residing within, and is able to recognize that her life is divided into before and after. By sharing not only the details of her investigation but also her psychic journey, Jentz shows us that closure has many meanings. While the details of her attack are indeed horrific, the book offers inspiration to survivors of violence and trauma.
I avoid fiction, so always looking for a somewhat factual "good read". This is a good story--scary, and a wake-up call for those who think they are invincible. However, the author apparently is dealing with remaining emotional issues ( and I understand why) but the rambling is difficult to read through. The recollections of the several characters involved were told in detailed conversation, which became repetitive and a chore to read. I had difficulty staying engaged, and skimmed a good portion of it.
