Gentlemen Prefer Succubi Succubus Diaries Jill Myles 9781416572824 Books

I've had this one on my Kindle for a while and for some reason it just kept getting pushed to the back of the stack. It's a 1st person POV, paranormal/urban fantasy story of a woman being turned into a succubus. There's some love/sex interest, but not a clear path of romance. Jackie, as a new succubus, has certain morals about who she'll sleep with (unlike the other succubus she meets), but she's not very smart on her adventure. The tide of the story washed her up where she needed to be and she was just carried along for the ride. It was action packed and sort-of sexy, but I liked the story much more than the characters. I wished every minute that Jackie would have actually asked questions instead of following her assumptions and believing the last thing she heard and never thinking about anything else. There was some blood and guts, but I didn't feel drawn so deeply into the story that it got gory in my head. Also, for a succubus, she didn't have a lot of sex - there was quite a bit of sexual tension but very little release. I felt like it nearly veered into a moralistic, virgins-are-better, soap box sermon; but it also had her having sex with more than one guy so...an odd dichotomy to be sure.

There was a bunch of talk about her powers as a succubus and half-formed reasons, but I felt very little of the backstory was fleshed out. She never took control of her powers, never really found out what most of them were, and half the time when someone tried to use their powers it didn't work because of an out clause.

I might check out the next one in the series because I enjoyed the writing, but it wouldn't be my go-to if I'm looking for a romance. It's a good lighthearted, slightly funny, urban fantasy with some unattached sexy-times, but also leaves you a little dizzy with the amount of lack.

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi Succubus Diaries Jill Myles 9781416572824 Books Reviews

I really wanted to like this book, as I love the concept of succubi stuck between fallen angels and vampires. But I found Jackie impossible to cheer on - constantly down on herself, wandering into dangerous situations without thinking, unable to make a choice, and so oblivious that I found it hard to suspend my disbelief. Which is sad because there’s some great elements in here that I love in paranormal romance - especially the bad-boy-turned-tortured-soul Zane. But between Jackie’s character and the big plot holes, I struggled to finish the book.
Jackie is a lowly docent at a museum who dreams of becoming an archeologist. She has the schooling, but her meek, mousy appearance means she keeps getting passed over for promotions. Fed up with yet another lost opportunity, Jackie sooths herself with a few too many martinis. After leaving the bar alone, she meets up with a vampire who bites her. Under his spell, he sets her in the way of Noah, a hot fallen angel with whom she has an incredible one-night-stand. When spellbound Jackie returns to the alley with the vampire, he tosses her used body into a dumpster to wait out her transformation.

When Jackie awakens, she finds that she has been turned into a succubus…an immortal woman who requires sex to survive. The silver lining? Her size 14 body shrinks to a size 6, her B-cup boobs swell to 34DD, and every man she meets wants her. The not so silver lining? She is under control of her vampire and angel masters, the two men who changed her. Luckily, neither man seems to want to take advantage of that power…yet. Jackie is also strangely moral for a sex-fiend and refuses to indulge in casual sex…even if it sort of comes in her new job description.

In order to control her Itch, Jackie makes a deal with the angel Uriel to do him a “little” favor in exchange for relief from her desires. Unfortunately, Jackie discovers too late that making deals with Heaven is not in her best interest as the price she has to pay is steep.

This book was fun, sexy and entertaining. I loved the contrast of the two love interests, Noah & Zane. They are polar opposites in every way, but it’s impossible not to love them both. I did get a little sick of Jackie making dumb mistakes. It doesn’t take a genius to know when to keep your mouth shut and do what you are told, but over and over she messes up. I suppose she had to in order to create the plot, but I hope this stupidity will go away quick as the series progresses.

Overall, I give Gentlemen Prefer Succubi…

Plot – 3 ½ bookmarks
Character Development – 3 ½ bookmarks
Love Story – 4 bookmarks (I really like both guys. It will be fun to see how this turns out in future books)
Sex Scenes – 4 bookmarks

Dream Cast (otherwise known as who I pictured while reading) – Christina Hendricks (Jackie), Simon Baker (Noah), Billy Zane (Zane), Tinsel Korey (Remy), David Anders (Uriel)
First off..this book is about a SUCCUBUS. There is going to be sex in the book. So, I will save you the trouble right there. Now... let's get to the rest...
Now we have angels, vampires and fallen angels. Now there is a lot of stuff going on in the book that will take a bit a reading to get though but, it is WORTH IT. I read this book at work and took about a week. There was stuff going on with the girl and I know that a lot of people didn't like the whole "dumpster dumping" but hey, you got to start somewhere. Is it worth the price? No. I happen to get mine on sale and I can say it was worth 2.99 but that is it. Yes, I got the rest in my queue so when any of them drop, I will but.
